Ever get the feeling mom is just relieved he found someone? True love is the greatest thing, in the world, except for a nice MLT, mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe…. *smacks his lips*
Nicole is acting confused in panel 3, presumably because she doesn’t think she’s ever met Mrs. Carter (note how she addresses her formally), but still gets a warm hug.
Meanwhile Mrs. Carter is acting like she’s known Nicole for ages. Certainly longer than Nicole has been Alex’s Research Lead.
Huh? Why is Nicole so embarassed? Aaand.. when did Nicole travel to the twin’s home? Or is Mom just visiting?
Well, I guess that tomorrow will clarify stuff. Because I am a bit confused..
Alex used to play hockey with Nicole’s brother, which is how he connected with her for the sleep study in the first place. So it is quite likely that Mrs. Carter has known her or at least her family for a long time.
Oh, wait, I get it now (after several re-reads..รกhm a bit dense..)
The way Mom says “Nicole?” is the way someone would say a name when he/she hasn’t seen that person since childhood, or something.
I guess, indeed, that through Alex’ hockeying with Nicole’s brother, it’s reasonable to surmise that Mom has known Nicole when she was a little girl.
Nah…someone pointed out a few days back that the last real world stuff we’d seen included Nicole on the train ride back home, so it seems likely that she may actually live nearby.
I think the next page is going to be great because that simple exchange that seems to have caused so much confusion in us has undoubtedly caused even more confusion in the characters involved in the story. -sits back- Let’s see how this turns out. -smiles wickedly and pushes his glasses up with his middle finger-
I think she’s more surprised that Dan’s mom caught them kissing and all she said was “How are you, dear?” =P And also that look can mean “does she know about us?”
Well, Dan is bright, just socially awkward. Judging from Nicole’s wardrobe and insistence on study study study, I’m guessing she’s similar to Dan in social life. and she DID already turn down Alex…so it’s all good =)
Well, considering, that she just walked in on them kissing, I’m going to assume the answer is “yes”. Besides, it’s Mrs. Carter’s face that I think is more interesting. It looks like she had a single word pass through her head, and that word is “Grandbabies!”
That link to the Pee-Wee Soccer page just made me realise how much darker Nicole’s skin has gotten over the years. Most characters remained pretty constant, despite the graphical upgrades over the course of the run of the series, but Nicole’s skin seems to have gotten progressively darker. I mean, she’s got lighter skin than Obama does in Chapter 1, and now it’s much darker.
Not that there’s anything wrong with changing the artistic decision on Nicole’s design, just that it’s a strange inconsistency that I didn’t pick up while reading because of progressive art shifts and long periods of time passing between Nicole’s appearances. This sort of change happens in most long-running series, though usually not in terms of colour changes, but in terms of stylistic changes, like eye shapes or hair-lines or such.
It had completely escaped me that Dan, Alex, and Nicole all knew each other from childhood! No wonder they were so cranky with each other at the start. And that Nicole is the older woman in this relationship. Whee!
BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT HE SAID! He distinctly said “to blave,” and as we all know, “to blave” means “to bluff.” Huh? So you all were playing cards, and he cheated.
First!
Loving the Princess Bride artwork!

Hello?

I’m sure all will be revealed…… eventually.
You were always such a bright girl,
which begs the question; why are you wasting your time with one of my sons?
Huh? Why is Nicole so embarassed? Aaand.. when did Nicole travel to the twin’s home? Or is Mom just visiting?
Well, I guess that tomorrow will clarify stuff. Because I am a bit confused..
More importantly, in this case, she seems to KNOW Nicole from earlier in life. I didn’t know this. Was this ever mentioned before?
Alex used to play hockey with Nicole’s brother, which is how he connected with her for the sleep study in the first place. So it is quite likely that Mrs. Carter has known her or at least her family for a long time.
This is so adorable that the mum fortunately likes Nicole anyway x3
Umm… a little bit too much bloom there… I can barely make out some of the details…
Oh, wait, I get it now (after several re-reads..รกhm a bit dense..)

It may be time for a refresher. I don’t remember if Alex and Dan’s mom being a teacher was ever mentioned.
Mrs. Carter is Nicole’s father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate!
Bazinga!
– So… what does that make us?
– Um… nothing, I guess…
Hopefully tomorrow,Mrs. Carter leaves the three to their discussing Dreamland’s fate or whatever else is going on. ๐
Sounds like Mom was/is a teacher and Nicole was one of her favorite students.
Perhaps Nicole is just surprised at being caught kissing the mother’s son.
Ah.. thanks for saving me the time of looking for that ๐
Nah…someone pointed out a few days back that the last real world stuff we’d seen included Nicole on the train ride back home, so it seems likely that she may actually live nearby.
Well remembered!

Does anyone have a link to that page in the archives?
Thanks!
Mom already knows Nicole??
Alex and Nicole’s little brother played Pee Wee Hockey together (Nicole is 1 year ahead of them)

She leaves nearby. Same train home.

one would presume they did meet…. since they new each other when they were kids… Mrs Carter seems like she was/is the typical “Soccer Mom”.

you know it’s almost a little creepy how much Dan and his mother look alike!
Try like page 10ish? Like within the first 2 pages of real world Alex.
Good find! Thanks, Joey.
I see your schwartz is just as big as mine…

‘creepy’ for blood relations to look similar (or even very similar)? That’s a strange comment.
I find it unusual how much Nicole and Dan look alike (change the skin tone and hair style).
Panel 2 is priceless.
Oops, I meant panel 3.
Well, considering, that she just walked in on them kissing, I’m going to assume the answer is “yes”. Besides, it’s Mrs. Carter’s face that I think is more interesting. It looks like she had a single word pass through her head, and that word is “Grandbabies!”

Now let’s see how well you handle it.
That would be me ๐ Nice to see my observation panned out. Gotta get something right ๐
Yeah. I did an “upgrade” for her when they “almost kissed” that one day.
Different lipstick and eyes and such too.
no kidding its looks AMAZING!!!
awesome ^^
Remember the Gamelons from the anime series Star Blazers? Their skin tone was more human but it turned blue later on!
I love Nicole’s expression in the third panel, “Help me…”
BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT HE SAID! He distinctly said “to blave,” and as we all know, “to blave” means “to bluff.” Huh? So you all were playing cards, and he cheated.
let me clarify…
creepy as in Jack & Jill (Adam Sandler) Creepy
panle 3 i feel realy sorry for her
Well, as soon as you throw Adam Sandler in there, creepy goes up by a few powers of ten.
