Ow, Scott – action FTW! Nastajia&Alex Superstars! cool strip btw.
Sushi, anyone?
How fast can Alex swing that sword under water? The depth of the cut we’re seeing may be it and that one strike may have taken all he had. This could be a difficult battle.
I love the lighting and the color on this page!
^__^
Oo, I LOVE this sea-serpent. Giant teeth, glowy eyes, dramatic facial fins…
…and comes with it’s own lantern (headlight).
magic
Well the mermaid magic/transformation clearly made him adept at swimming through water quite quickly, bychance the magic (as Aries noted) extends to the rest of his body, generally making him more able under water, more akin to what he’s like on land?
Or it could be like a light saber: Momentum hardly matters.
That last panel is awesome:
Hey there! Need some fish? *sound of Nastajia’s arrow whizzing through the water followed by monster fish scream*
Really, REALLY hungry!?! *sound of Alex cutting into said monster fish followed by more screaming*
Then come on dooooooown to Alexander’s ‘Fish by the Sword’ Restaurant, where we serve fresh monster fish to satisfy a monster appetite, cut so fine you’ll swear it’s MAGIC! ^_^
(Please note availability of monster fish is subject to life-threatening battle outcomes in deep ocean caverns and therefore cannot be guaranteed.)
Reminds me of the death of the fellbeast mount, grounding the witch king of Angmar in “The Return of the King”!
I’m not sure it even noticed the arrow, there 🙂
was gonna be upset about killing of innocent fish who’s just trying to find his next meal so he doesn’t starve to death… then someone said sushi. Now I want sushi. Just trying to find my next meal…
considering the sword can cut through a brick building like butter (see: http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/the-dreamland-chronicles/chapter-06/page-347/) I don’t think he needs to swing all that hard! 🙂
The first panel looks like a painting from a Drew Struzan poster. Beautifully done.
I was thinking this as well! The arrows get a pass because they are magic energy arrows, but swinging the sword would be really REALLY hard. peircing, though, that would work well.
course i’ll be the first person to admit that i could be wrong.
beautiful colors in these, Scott!
first panel is incredibly awesome!!!!!!
A Deep Sea Monster?? YIKES!
(I’d say inconceivable, but I don’t think that word means what I think it means.
Can you say ‘slinky slithering sea serpent sinks with nashing teeth’ ten times really fast?
sea serpent: i was going to nomnom some humans, then i took an arrow to the nose.
gargh.. I just found this comic last night.. and read all off it ! this is gold.. I wantz more O . O
Ah – Filet’o’Fish! Omnomnomnom.
Now draw the knife UNDER the fins, all the way to the tail… 🙂
See the important thing is that Alex and Natasha don’t even need to speak when going into “Action Mode”, which means they both are getting better able to “read” each other. It shows that they are becoming closer. It’s a relationship defining moment.
Dang it Nastajia*
I wouldn’t call that like butter. That scene with context is that they are falling from about 30 stories, and he wakes up after 10 stories, time pauses in the dream, and he figures out a way to survive with the help of Dan. He then goes back to sleep and slams the sword in to the side of the building, and is stopped after another 9 stories of falling. Thats not like a hot knife through butter. A hot knife through butter would have left them screwed. Not to mention a fishes scales act as a sort of armor (not very good armor, but what do you expect?) that would make it also difficult for Alex to have made that sort of cut even if it was on dry land and not under water, which may or may not be a mute point if the mermaid transformation applies to the entire body and not just the lungs and legs.
Go do an expiriment, take a knife under water with you and swing it in a strait line with the blade pointing parallel to your force , you will notice very little resistance to your force. I’m sure that he could muster more than enough power behind his swing that it wouldn’t matter much, and for the guy saying that he would be hard pressed to make that cut even on dry land….really?
Since there’s no rice, seaweed or wasabi, it would be sashimi.
OH MY GOD.
why is that first panel is EPIC
*so epic -.- darn these non-edited comments!
lmao!!!
Same Dream Time, Same Dream Channel? 😛
Nas is so CALM! Her face is like “Ho-hum, giant monster, put an arrow in it, another day at the office.” Which, disturbingly, it pretty much is for her and Alex.
I feel kind of sorry for the sea monster. It had no idea what it was going up against, it was just looking for its next meal (or maybe trying to eliminate intruders). On the other hand, it obviously wasn’t going to stop attacking, and other options to get rid of it were decidedly limited…
ho hum, another sea monster, I think I’ll just shoot it with an arrow.
Nastajia’s expression is EPIC in the 1st panel because of the way it contrasts with Alex’s. Even once he springs into action, his face is all miss piggy screaming. I’m sure she’s calmly loading her next arrow with the same “really? This is all the dungeon master sends me?” expression on her face.
I know, I love how Nastajia is all “So it’s a sea monster, no big deal, let’s just deal with the pest and move on” and Alex on the other hand is all “Gah! where did that come from?! Eep!”
“Slices like butter” is a figure of speech. The point is that Alex uses the sword to cut through a masonry wall. Masonry has much more resistance to slicing than any fishy things.
Alex holds on to the blade while cutting though the wall. So, if the wall slice worked because Alex had lots of momentum then he also must have very powerful forearms and wrists to catch the fall. With enough power you can split a fish with an unsharpened quarter inch rolled steel plate. Take, for example, whales hitting boat propellers. Propellers win. When boat propellers hit rocks in shallow areas the rocks win.
If the blade was slicing through the wall without resistance then Alex could still slow down by twisting the blade so that the flat side drags. Similar to the way you can break with a paddle in a canoe.
Quick Zelda: shoot it with a light arrow.
“ehh, my name is…”
And you Link. you chop of its head!
“I think you are confusing us with someone els…”
DONT ARGUE WITH ME!!!
First panel’s Nastajia looks really sleepy. Alex looks like a goof.
Of course, for an accurate experiment, you need to get kissed by a mermaid or -man.
Hey, it’s MAGIC, guys! It may not follow “normal” physics–especially with a magic sword interacting with a magic transforming kiss.
Welcome, new Dreamer!
outstanding
I really like the first panel. With the combination of the light and the underwater environment, it comes across more as drawn than 3D, compared to what we’re used to. The faces especially. Anyone else notice this, or just me? Still great, though.
only if you had enough lemons
