Hope you enjoyed the flashback and all that it revealed.

Hopefully we will find out why Nick was in the cave after all that time
Wow. That went faster than I realized. Still as nice as it was to get the backstory, it’s great to see Alex and Co. again.
I don’t remember ever not loving an update. no exception here.
Great flashback…
And now we’re ready to rush in action… no need for the tablets anymore, just go and kick Nic π
Ooops… forgot Dragon Rule #1: don’t mess with him if you taste good with Ketchup.
Wards and alarms and guilty conscience, trying to see if Arthur was back or not… Now, let’s learn what the giants know.
Dangit. Now that we finally knew how Nic got his throne, we get a reference to a hunderd years of war. Was this mentioned before?
Question for Alex is: What now? Confront Nic, try to remove the spell on his brother, save other tablets from being destroyed, restore peace, repel nightmare realm, … Priorities!
For some reason, I kinda want the sword now to say, “So uhhhm.. want to hear a JOKE? π I’ve spent centuries preparing it!! Ok ok here it goes…”
Is it just me or do the grafics look buffed up?
The sword’s explanation for how it knows about Merlin knocking out the ambushing wraiths:
“Because Merlin is awesome and that’s totally what he would do.”
And for Nics meeting with the Wraiths:
“Because emm… Ok, I totally made that up. Are you sure you don’t want to hear my joke?”
worth every day, page and panel!
The flashback was great, and I can’t wait to sit down & read the paper version all at once. π
ALEX!! *glomp* How I missed you!!
Psh. He was able to extrapolate the critical elements, particularly that the conversation took place, purely from the events that transpired within the cave – obviously, they had spoken before then and with a few centuries to work with determining exactly what they may have said…
And maybe he actually SAW the bit with Merlin? Remember, he’s the necklace too…
Hail Hail the gangs all here!!
something seems a bit off to me as well, especially the shadows on Nastajia and Alex in the 1st panel.
i cant believe it’s been 11 weeks already! great flashack^_^
I did not saw any cemetery in the comic. I think I know where a Dragon like Nicodemus get his meat.
Okay, all of you that said you loved the flashback (and everybody else, too), go prove it and VOTE!

How long did it take the sword to tell them this story? I started wondering yesterday what would have happened had Alex woken during it. It would have been torture for his DL friends, just sat there waiting to hear the rest whenever he showed up again…. π
Glad to be back to the heros; I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here.
Really enjoyed the flashback. Fleshed out the history very nicely.
My first thought on reading this page – Ok, where is Arthur? The sword says he was with him the entire time, Alex pulled the sword out of the stone which is near Arthur.
Can’t wait to flip to the next page! π
I forgot where we were in the present, because we were in the past for 3 months!!! He he
Three months? I thought we just started… Wow it really was three months. Its weird how long the weekends seem in the mean time but yet the whole thing together only seems like a few minutes.
that’s exactly what I am wondering
of course with that logic, it would suggest that the sword should be trapped between worlds as well!
on that note… when does book 4 come out?
That’s actually a good question. I would assume that when Arthur finally died in the Real World, his body in Dreamland would cease to exist.
The eyes of the Stone Giants always make me smile. They are about the only thing that looks off in the whole comic, and yet it fits in quite well.
ooh we’re back to the present!
the story is so great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for me it’s like twilight is for some girls!!!
Hey, while there all talking is david is being attacked by wraths?
The only difference I see is that the creation of the bracelet required both his physical self and his dream self to be asleep at the same time… The sword/necklace already passes wholly between the worlds, as does the Bahta Alikchi… but from how they were talking about the bracelet, it would have allowed ANYONE to pass to and from Dreamland.
I think the reason the sword was not trapped was due to Arthur relinquishing it… it was out of his hands, and when a rightful successor came and drew the sword it would stand to reason that Arthur was released from its hold and he likely vanished from wherever in the tomb the Wraiths had hidden him. Whether he’s floating eternally in a state of limbo, or has finally passed on, or whether he shows up on Alex’s doorstep remains to be seen… if we ever get to see, that is, as it may not be important to the story going forward.
Hundred Year war? How long did that last (dopeslapped by all readers). Ow! The question now is, What next? (I wouldn’t mind hearing the swords joke…)
So much for my “sword as being an extension of Dreamland” hypothesis. I figured it would have odd stirrings, like dreams as it slumbered, reflections of the events outside. But it does explain how it knew what was going on in the waking world perhaps βΒ it’s connected to the true king of Dreamland, so it records it’s owner’s immediate history. This effect extends to the castle and tomb in Dreamland as they are extensions of the king, so that’s how it knew of Nic’s and the wraiths’ plots? But if it did, it should have warned Arthur? Crappit, my whole train of thought shot off a cliff and burst into flames.
In our world: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundred_Years%27_War. Note, Random, that the dates, 1337 to 1453, total 116 years–but there were also years of peace between the wars that are included.
Oh, the rock giants! I’d forgotten about them! =P I love their eyes, they remind me of old-school cartoon faces. XD
Scott,
Just went back and read the whole saga from when Nicodemus picked up the sword and it started talking. The whole sequence works great! I don’t think you should worry about what the sword was present for during each part of the story… the whole sequence plays out naturally, returning back to the group at the end.
Nicely done!
Casey
I doubt there’s much saving to the other tablets at this point. Any that Nick knows how to find have already been destroyed. Perhaps the only tablets that might yet exist would be the ones belonging to the mysterious Guardians, and who knows who or where they are.
finally back from Florida!!
and i loved it, but anyways good to catch up on what transpired and find that it was nic that hid the cave, but i have to ask if the sword and Aurthur are nearby each other then where is his body?
Cool. Thanks Casey!
Thank you all!
Believe it or not…I’m still tweaking some lighting. I keep trying to improve.
Funny, though. I looked up a Pixar still to see how THEY lit an outdoor scene with trees.
http://eakenwrites.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/the-incredibles.jpg
You know…for all I worry about trying to live up to Pixar movie standards…when you look at a STILL of their work…like this image…you really see all the flaws as well.
I’m so enamoured by their storytelling and animation…I forget how hard it is to make a good looking still.
All that to say…I was happy to see I’m not too far off the mark.
π
Hi all!
This last panel is taking FOREVER to render. It’s 11pm and it looks like another couple hours to go.
I’ll update tomorrow’s page in the morning. So it’ll be about 8 hours late.
OK?
Sorry about that.
I’m curious… Was this Dreamland Hundred Years’ War supposed to have occurred at about the same time as the real world Hundred Years’ War?
Of course there’s a massive time difference between the imagined rule of King Arthur and the reign of King Edward III … but then there’s the time difference between Dreamland and Earth too. A hundred year war in Dreamland time could be what, thousands in Earth time? Or would it be less? AAAHHH!!! Confused.
Do not mess with dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup~ :D.
I just wanted to say that I really like the lighting in the first three panel especially. It’s so crisp and clear. Then again, I’m just a fan of crisp lighting. π
mwahehehehehe someone had to say it XD
*nod nod* same here.
I actually had that in mind when I wrote my comment, but I think that, unlike our world, it was continuous for 100 years.
Yeah, that’s what I wanted to say: shadows don’t look funny in reality (or in a movie) because they keep changing – even a shadow from stones (i.e. immobile object) will change if projected on a mobile object (i.e. a person in constant micro-motion).
But whatever you do, it will look strange in a snapshot without motion. The way out is actually to dim the shadows, i.e. to introduce “errors” in you model of the physical world, either with more specular light or more ambiant. Then you erase a bit the shadows and give them more of that “transient” effect.
Just my 2ct, and from somebody who did ray tracing only with some math objects – no artist here…
good thought on the sword being out of his hands, but that is disproved here:
http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/the-dreamland-chronicles/chapter-04/page-240/
The necklace doesn’t exist while the sword is in Dreamland.
http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/the-dreamland-chronicles/page-940%E2%80%A6/
I figure the sword doesn’t get trapped because it isn’t made to follow the king everywhere, just between Dreamland and Earth. So if the king were to die or get trapped the sword would just stay in whichever world it was in until someone else used it.
So the hundred years’ war developed in Dreamland? I thought it had to do with sovereignty in France.
The Hundred Year’s War was fought over a dream, thereby become the War Fought for the Worst Possible Reason, beating out the Trojan War, fought over a wife.
