Abaddon has its roots in a few religious texts/mythologies. 🙂 It’s a good name for a king of nightmares, given its origin.

Nic’s desire was actually an overstuffed, twice-baked potato with sour cream and green onions. So yeah, about as far from his desire as can be.

Ha! I swear that I’ve heard ‘Abaddon’ used as a demon’s name once or twice.
It’s ‘N’ before ‘E’, except after ‘O’, right? Or am I thinking of a different rule on that? o.O?

Ah, the ruler of the Nightmare Dimension is named after (and, for all I know, *IS*) one of the great fallen angels. Just the sort of guy you trust to help out when you’re in trouble.
It would seem that Nicodemus has almost literally made a deal with the Devil, and the Devil’s handed him essentially absolute power — and thus will he be absolutely corrupted.
And that’s it for Nicodemus. Power corrupts, as we’ve seen.
Dare I say “Abaddon the Despoiler”? 😛

Abaddon is a PERFECT name for the Lord of the Nightmare Realm!
I really was loathing Nic, but now I’m starting to soften to him a little after seeing his reaction to this whole event.
I wonder if there would be a way to get the pendent out of limbo… that would be totally awesome. Nicole would be able to see Felicity again and Dan would be able to see the world he’s imagined for years.

It seems like the Nightmare realm really did not want the competition form the humans. they did form half the peace treaty. failure of the treaty would have left Abaddon free to bring his army to bear on Dreamland. that would not be good for the Dreamlanders.
I just checked Chapter 1, page 20, and noticed the sword’s position. Did someone else reposition it? Because on page 20, it is straight and not set deep into the stone. On page 1132, it is set deep and crooked. Did Nicodemus move the sword? Or can the dragon even touch it?
Abbadon’s also a class of space-faring Battleship in EVE Online (the pride of the religious Amarr Empire’s navies). As was said, it has roots in religious and/or mythological sources.
When I hear Abbadon, I think of the underworld of Terry Brooks’s Landover series. But it works. It wouldn’t be the first time a ruler has the same name as the place ruled: Pluto, Hades, Hel all come to mind.
I doubt this one is Horus’s clone, but that was my exact same thought as well.
By the way, “You have the entire army of the nightmare realm at your disposal.”?
Sounds like the wraiths expects Nicodemus to lead them in a conquest of Dreamland.

This storyline has is adding an interesting depth to Nicodemus motives, very nice.

All the Abaddons come from the same core source, which goes back at least to the Bible I think, and maybe farther.
It *WOULD* be an interesting sequence if Our Heroes can CONFRONT Nicodemus with what he’s done in a way that forces him to face it. “Is *THIS* the Dreamland you were trying to protect, Nicodemus? A Dreamland ruled by a tyrant, who kills those who find out the truth, who uses treachery and lies to control the populace?”

I actually think of Abaddon as having a distinctly different pronunciation from abandon… I think stress on the last syllable, as opposed to the middle/second, at the very least, in my mind (the two ‘a’s are pronounced the same ‘AAH!’ sound, while the last syllable is pronounced ‘don’/’on’). Though the actual pronunciation might be wildly different from what I imagine seems right.
…. buut… it’s not as much fun to mess around with, then.

I can’t imagine what’d happen if someone tried that sleepover trick of putting his claw into a giant bowl of warm water while he slept then.

It’s from the book of Revelation: “They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.” (Rev. 9:11, NIV) Both names mean “destroyer”.
Though a few of us are clever enough to spell leeft … ;D

Lord Abaddon of Nightmare Realm. This is the true antagonist of Dreamland, it seems, with Nicodemus ruling with his approval. Looks like Abaddon may be the true manipulator here, sending his wraiths to lead Nicodemus to the thrown. I wonder if the final conflict of the series will not be Alex versus Nicodemus, but against Abaddon. Perhaps Nicodemus will even have a Darth Vader -esque redemption at the end. Hmm…
