Hope you enjoy this week’s pages.
Scott
Nice little Monty Python reference. I approve.
No, It shouldbe “Tis but a flesh wound!”
Come back so I can bite you!
Happy Memorial Day, everyone!
LOL. I love it. I don’t know if it’s accurate and I don’t care. It was a nice little surprise.
LOL you just can’t beat the classics
Oooh, look at that fierce grin on Merlin’s face. Never underestimate an old dude with a stick!
…..you would think Excalibur would be a bit, bigger?
In reality having an arrow go so deep into you would be bad news (pain shock, right arm immobilized) and snapping it (so you have the arrowhead move freely in your wound) would be a very bad idea… but I assume Percival is just that badass. ๐
He is just that badass. Never under estimate an overly muscled dude. XD
Haha, I actually expected Arthur to try and avenge his death in a Cleese-esque fashion, but this works too.
Snapping it off is better than pulling it out, which would cause the arrowhead to remain lodged and move around more freely. Snapping it off like that reduces the possibility of hitting the shaft and damaging more muscle. And considering the time period, a mere arrow isn’t much compared to, say, a sword slashing your legs off.
Merlin: I beat you with a stick!
For some reason there is something about this page that I just love!
“I’m invincible!”
“…you’re a loony.”
I love this page! I especially love, after all the Monty Python references in the comments for the past week or so, that there was actually one /In The Comic/. Brilliant!
Does look more like a 2 foot Shortsword rather than a 3 foot Longsword. Can be hard to tell though as Arthur is a fairly big bloke and eye gets used to the oversized weapons in CRPGs.
I, too, approve of the Python reference… and Happy Memorial Day, Scott, to you and all of my fellow Dreamlanders!
’tis just a flesh wound!!
How did it pierce the chain mail though? It wasn’t a crossbow…
XD ! That hits home for me ’cause, well… I am an old man with a stick, LOL!
Love this page! That last panel is so cool!
One thing. Too. Short. Swords.
I am aware this is comic, and it doesn’t have to be correct in many ways. But please. You don’t respect guy with sword which length barely surpasses his forearm.. you.. well.. just don’t ! I’m not saying that short swords are bad, but gimme a brake. Artur doesn’t have to wield two-handed sword.. but at least longsword ? Or something like that ?
Chain mail is relatively ineffective against any arrow shot. It’s mainly designed to prevent slashing attacks from swords. It could keep the arrow from going too deeply into the shoulder (hence “tis but a scratch”). Usually, the chain mail is worn over a strong leather jerkin, which when combined with the chainmail could take enough of the force out of the blow not to immobilize the arm, give the “but a scratch”, and still be lodged in something (the jerkin) enough that snapping it off would be totally appropriate.
its the angle Arthur is holding his blade. In the last panel he’s holding it angled back toward him(I think) in preparation for a slash or a high energy riposte. Just enough to fool the eyes. He was still holding it angled off again in the first panel as well…but if he’s a bada**, which must be a definite he could rock that furball with a short sword. heck that line is gonna get so conglomerated in a second that the short is GOONA OWN AN’ POAWN
Man this is getting so Exciting! Commence fur ball in Three…Two…And…
Perhaps it’s my Role-playing game experience, but I’d be more worried about the magic user. ESPECIALLY as this one happens to be THE Merlin. Just sayin’
First rule of combat: Wizard dies first!
As in, “I’m getting better…”?
It really depends on the angle we’re seeing them, doesn’t it? If this Arthur has the same sword as Alex will have, it’s no short sword…
Yep! In my role playing days, we used to say, “Do not let him get the spell off!
Why is Arthur’s beard black and white in Dreamland, but white and black in the real world? It is inverted. I like the white better. ๐
Authur’s sword does look shorter, but maybe it is a different sword. If the sword is a necklace in present day, why couldn’t it be in medieval times? I hope Percival arm doesn’t get chopped off ^^.
Hehe. I thought the same thing when I read that!
The saying still applies, “Walk softly and carry a big stick”
Tkrain’s right. Arrows focus all the force on a single point, which allow them to get through the chainmail. Even a katana can’t cut through chainmail though. At least Viking chainmail.
I think Ravath’s right. It’s a short sword… which isn’t at all suitable for Arthur. *shrug*
I’d say it could be the angle, but it looks really short in all the panels we see it in.
When I saw the previous page, my first response was “Oh no, Percival can’t die, he’s awesome! Why Scott, why?!”
And then I see this page, revealing that while Scott is using his own version of the Arthurian mythos, he’s keeping things like established character abilities well intact. For everyone above who was wondering about it, yes, Percival IS that bad***. Strongest out of all of Arthur’s knights (not the most skilled, that’s Lancelot, but definitely strongest).
I think this is the first time a webcomic has made me geek out about old English literature. Hah!
I can’t believe I actually predicted a line in the story. It was a coincidence, honest!
Somehow I don’t think these 5 attackers have much of a chance.
The sword he is carrying isn’t his big go off to war sword. That is more of a carry around all the time sword that he has with him for a walk in the fields around the castle. He doesn’t have armor on either but I think he wears more than a tunic when he plans to fight. Armor and big weapons would be heavy and although I’m sure he could handle them even at his advancing age there is no need to carry them all the time. An army would be seen approaching long before it arrived, and he can handle little bands of raiders without full battle gear.
INDEED! lol
Scabbard length. Not much playing with angles here. You just won’t convince me that it’s longer than that little scabbard Artur has.
Percival: “Tis but a scratch.”
Arthur: “A scratch?! Your arm’s off!”
Percival: “No it isn’t…”
Arthur: “What’s that then?”
Percival: “My arm.”
Arthur: “Huh…I don’t know what came over me.”
So does Lancelot go on a killing spree now? And when do we meet Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Comic?
It must be a short sword. Look at the scabbard length in the first frame – barely waist to knee.
Somehow, I’ve gotten sucked into nit-picking my favorite web graphic novel and I’m not happy about it. I’m going to stop commenting unless it is something that Nancy has picked up and commented upon.
I can’t wait to see them in action ๐
One of my father’s favorite sayings (suitably cleaned up and paraphrased for mixed audiences, of course) is, “Don’t mess with old men. They’re too slow to run from you, so they have to stand and fight like a cornered rat; and they’ve been doing that a lot longer than you have.”
๐
actually, he says ’tis but a scratch’ and later says ‘it’s only a flesh wound’ ๐ so it’s used correctly here ๐
(sorry, ive seen the movie over a dozen times xD)
It was great!
We don’t. That’s why he is Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Comic.
He would have been in real trouble if it hit him in the knee.
Dude!you get shot in the shoulder ad it’s “just a scratch”? How crazy are you?
Oh, so every bad guy dies from an arrow, but a good guy survives a direct shot to the heart and regards it as a scratch?
