The Making of Dreamland Page 36…
OK, guys n’ gals…
This is it.
This is the last “Making of” page I have.
I’ll be posting fan art and guest pages from here on out.
Until I get my buffer back and can start updating daily again.
For those of you who are wondering…
This is really only the second time in 4 years I’ve had to do this. And once I start a chapter…I don’t miss a day.
So please be patient as I take this short break to get Chapter 15 ready.
Once we start…it’ll be a good 6-10 months of non-stop pages 5 days a week.
I promise.
π
Thanks all!
Scott
I look forward to the nonstop pages!
(Hey! First post!)
Anyways, I enjoy these making of pages. It’s fun to have behind the scenes info!
Dude, I find it sad that many of the readership don’t really appreciate the amount of work you put into this. Otherwise, I think they would GO VOTE (http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx) and help you to beat out comics that only update once or twice a week (nor do they take the time as you do to build a buffer for the holidays and vacations, so they either bring in guest art in the middle of the story or they just don’t post for weeks on end).
You do what you gotta’ do, and don’t forget to take care of your wife, first and foremost, as well as your children. Then, take care of your comic. π
Agreed.
I just archive-binged Goblins the other day. It’s good, don’t get me wrong; but Dreamland Chronicles is head and shoulders better. (So is Digger IMHO, but that one’s a relative unknown by comparison … )
It looks like between you, me, and IronBandit, we should have a voting link in the comments every day now (except maybe weekends; but I suppose we could put a couple of extra reminders in the Friday comments … ). So no excuses, people; GO VOTE!
Hey, who’s the figure in the background with the axe, just over the Paddington and Kiwi frames?
β
Well, why isn’t here just a permanent vote button to vote for Dreamland Chronicles? I think many more readers would take the easy chance to vote.
By the way… I really love your comic π
it would be a LOT handier if that link were actually put in the website layout :-\
I mean, there’s still plenty of space in the “Home – Archive – Extras – Links – Store” bar to add “Vote” to the end, imo.
I think it’s great that you make full use of the breaks between chapters. And the fact that this last cliffhanger was only slightly cliffhanger-y means that the wait for new updates isn’t too bad. I find the “Making Of” comics interesting, and the Guest Comics are a good way to find new webcomics to read (because you can never read too many webcomics.)
Besides, like you said, once you start a chapter, you don’t stop, which means the only place for this kind of stuff is between chapters.
It looks like some sort of statue (it has a kind of stone-y look to it, even through the haze), probably over the entrance to the Mines of Mori… err Hilmdel.
I second this. I know you don’t like to promote yourself, but having a “VOTE” button at the top would give people more opportunities to vote.
Remember, people wouldn’t vote for your comic, let alone read it, unless it was good, and IMHO, it is AWESOME!!! I’m sure others feel the same way, and would gladly vote for the comic, even if you only updated the vote incentive once a month. Personally, the incentives are not why I vote for a comic. They are just a nice little bonus that it is sometimes nice to see, but I would gladly vote 23 days in a row (the maximum number of weekdays in a single month), even if I saw the same incentive every time.
Take your time, man. Its no big. In fact, your stuff is so great I’m sure most of us don’t mind the wait!
Been reading for a long time, always been a βlurkerβ, but now feel like making a first time post on any webcomic. I can say that I find it truly amazing how you can be able to put together so many pages in such a short ‘hiatus’. I, like all the others who post here, believe that your time for health and family far outweighs the importance of a spectacular comic that is provided free for us all to enjoy. Scott, please accept my heartfelt gratitude and awe for providing me with a truly bright spot 5 days a week.
Scott, I have to say you’re almost as bad a worrier as my Mom is! And that’s saying something.. LOL. Please don’t worry about the hiatus. Take your time building your buffer we know the wait will be totally worth it. Anyone who says otherwise I’m sure will get a sound trouncing. ;D
The permanent button has been suggested before, and Scott has his reasons for not implementing it. So a few of us have taken it upon ourselves to obviate the need for one by including the voting link in a comment every day.
π
I’ve had a permanent button on the site for years. And even for a while had one in the blog.
But such a small percentage of people voted (I think it’s like 2%) that for aesthetic reasons…I decided to reduce the clutter.
If even 10% of the readers voted daily…we’d have 2000 votes a day.
I can’t put up daily pages, update the blog, twitter, facebook, AND make new art each day for the vote incentive. It’s just asking too much.
Also…while we get a steady stream of readers from TWC…I’ve not seen a difference from when we’re number 1 or number 30. We get the same 20k+ readers a day.
All this to say…I’d LOVE to have the link up again. If it made a difference.
If anyone has an idea. I’m all ears.
π
Aw. Thank you SO much!
I really appreciate it.
Thank you ALL for the well wishes. And encouragement.
I AM very worrisome when it comes to schedules and such.
I work very hard to provide the best quality art and story…but I know that this is not enough.
I need to also provide reliable updates. And I’ve done that for 4 years now.
I try to be a man of my word. And I hate being vague with anything. SO please forgive me if I feel bad not knowing if next week or the week after will be when I’m ready to start Chapter 15.
I’m working as hard as I can.
no comment, I’ll just VOTE instead – don’t really incentives for me to spend 2 seconds voting
Hey Scott— I have some fan/fun art for ya! Where do I send it?
Love the looking back, Scott! And looking forward to the next Chapter, whenever you’re ready.
Hey Laura…
I replied to your email. But it bounced back.
I couldn’t find an email on your site.
So I contacted you through DA.
This was last week (or earlier this week).
Check your DA account.
Yes, please put a vote button on the site. I found this site by looking through the popular comics after voting for another comic. I would like to vote when I read the comic, but sometimes can’t find the button or I forget. If not having a current incentive is a problem, just be honest about it. You can add a note that says “Incentive last updated on –/–/—-.” Then those who want to vote anyway can still do so.
I just recently caught up. I’m impressed by how much work this comic is and appreciate the high quality. Thank you for the great story and beautiful art.
I think you need to find a new bump map for Paddington’s texture. Try some black and white pics of the surface of granite, feed that into the render engine as your bump maps. Works for me…
Stay cool, mahn! No rush necessary now. We all are totally frugal and prefer a well-done, top notch graphic story than feeling like beta-testers of embryonic stuff!
Honestly, I would be motivated to vote even if the vote incentive was something completely non-Dreamland Chronicles. Like a cute puppy or something, with a different picture every day. I’m sure you could find cute, funny, or interesting pictures under a creative commons license. Make a thumbnail of it the vote incentive, and keep it somewhere visible.
I enjoyed the “making of” pages. Thank you for keeping us updated Scott!
Hey, Scott, long time no read (heh).
It’s me, MattM, commenter on previous comics, and while I haven’t been here for a while, I’ve been reading a nice webcomic called Housepets, which is only one place above Dreamland Chronicles in TWC, BTW.
I just recently finished reading the first printed book, and I’ve put the second one on hold at my library (I got no money to buy your wonderful books, sorry!).
I must say, it’s much better to view the comic in full colour on a physical paperback as compared to viewing it on my crappy laptop monitor, but I appreciate the effort you put into the comic. I plan on being a 3D graphics artist myself, though perhaps leaning toward more realistic special effects and CGI, like you see in the latest Hollywood movies (Avatar, anyone?).
But that’s quite a few years off, and I have no idea how to even start modelling in Blender (the top Linux modeler, which is free, BTW). So I think I’ll stick to reading your awesome comic, be it on paper or on screen. π
Your loyal reader,
Matthew.
yay fan art! π I’d love to see that ^^
I really have to remember to come here at night and see the fireworks more often.
I’d vote for fan art incentives–but that means we fans have to get busy and submit them!
TekServer…
Oh why oh why didn’t you supplement your posting with the obligatory link to Digger? Ursula Vernon would spin in her grave (if she was dead, that is).

For shame!
Hm. My bookmark to this site is (was) “/2010/01/26/dreamland-guest-page-12/”. Evidently the archive structure has changed (I love when webcomics do that, especially without redirects; it’s why PVP is my favorite). I guess the guest pages were taken down?
Sorry Tamfang…
We just decided to move the guest pages.
The problem is…Word Press/Comic Press doesn’t seem to want to let us do that out of “continuity”.
So still working on it.
