Usually there’s more than one type of coin. Even in the USA there were Dollars (and fractions), Dimes, Cents, and Eagles ($10). That’s four distinct types of coins.
However, since this is fiction, the spelling of “scheckles” could indeed be correct, as it would then be a currency that Scott made up. And, perhaps “scheckles” and “rubels” are like “copper, silver, and gold” in WoW- each is a lesser denomination of the other (1000 copper = 1 silver, 1000 silver = 1 gold, etc.).
Also consider: Human children, at least some of them, visit dreamland. It wouldn’t be out of line to think that some terminology and customs travel between the realms. I’d be surprised if they didn’t.
Not necessarily a spelling mistake: in Canada, England, and probably other parts of the world where there is still some form of British influence, it would indeed be spelled “fourty”, just as the US “color” would be “colour”, “neighbor” is “Neighbour”, and so on…
I now realize I should have gotten the Gravatar first… Although I don’t like the way no punctuation is allowed in the name… I usually use an underscore ( “_” ) between the “lake” and the “wrangler”…
I guess it’s still better than getting a random female avatar for a guy poster… What can I say… I’m a traditional kind of guy…
And I now also find out that this site only uses the email address to tie me in to the Gravatar, and does not care what name I use, so I can actually use the regular “lake_wrangler” name…
Not to worry: I won’t keep babbling on…
BTW, love the comic, so far. I have been reading the archives, and have just reached this point…
Are they betting on how fast she’ll get through their defenses? As in, they know she’ll find a way out somehow, so they might as well make some profit from it?

KITTIES!!!
First Rubels. Now Sheckels. Astoria’s currency exchange must be pretty well staffed…
Their denominations would still be less convoluted than England’s was at one time. I’ll spare you the details, heh.

forty shekels. lurker is correct that it’s forty, but the (israeli) currency is also spelled shekels.

What Akane said.
This comic has been using American English for everything else. They at least need to be consistent.
