This begs the question, why is he waking up? Was he not in control of when he was to wake up?

All the portals were closed by Merlin. Alex is now a permanent resident of Dreamland. Which is nice as he gets to live out a life with Nastajia.
Nah, Dan’s the King now….and the party don’t start ’til the King gets there! Hehe.

I got a hunch Dan’s waking up because Nicole is shaking him like a rag doll to do just that. Can’t blame her since she’s got no idea how things have gone on the other side.
I suspect that you are probably right and I would not blame Nicole one bit.
