Why do I think Nic is going to do something foolish, like giving SIA to Dan, so he can survive?
– Come on, Nicodemus. Stay cool, be a bad guy once more!
My two cents- at the moment it seems as if Nic is actually verbalizing his thoughts. That would be kind of foolish in my opinion, if it was intended to be read as if he were thinking the above dialogue could it be changed to a thought bubble or something?
PS- Keep up the awesome work otherwise, LOVE your epic story and art as well.
And Gil seems to have already written Dan and Nic both off, preferring to focus on the whole plant, assuming it’s actually in there. Loving the suspense here!
Based on is position and the way he is facing, I am thinking that Gil has dismissed Dan as a threat and is going after the elves. So, it is probable that he did not even see it, trusting his minion to finish Dan off.
I really don’t believe that the leaf/plant is in that pouch. If it was, Dan wouldn’t have thrown it away from himself the way he did. He would have kept it on his person so that if he died, it would travel back to Earth to his body instead of being at the feet of either Nic or Gil. I’m still in the camp of believing that Alex has the plant and carried it with him (unwittingly) through the portal into Dreamland.
I wonder if it’s because the sword has chosen who it serves. I also wonder what led the sword to move on back when Gil first ruled since he obviously didn’t die. When Arthur was held in suspension, a new king couldn’t exist until the sword transitioned. I want to know the story of how that happened in the past, when Gil chose to put himself in suspended animation.
refresh my memory–does one have to eat the plant just one time to be immortal, or do they have to eat a bit of it every once in an era to stay immortal?
Nick cannot help Dan. Nick exists in Dreamland while Dan is being choked in Wakeland (the real world).
If the leaf is there (Nick has reason to believe that it is) and if Nick eats it, it is likely Nick succumbing to the lure of power and possibly doing a Heel Turn.
The plant does not confer immortality in one dose. One leaf confers 100 years extended lifespan. Niviene has been been taking one each century waiting for Merlin. Dan told Gilgamesh that he would be furnished with one leaf per century to keep him alive if he agreed to call off the war. In Nic’s case, he is already immortal and needs the other aspect, the total healing conferred by consuming the leaf.
I think this is partially a side effect of the Point of View that Scott has chosen for this story. If he had chosen third person universal, then thought balloons would have done the trick.
As it is, the story is being told in third person limited and limited to the extent that we don’t get to see anyone’s thoughts.
Scott could have written the scene without Nick’s speech bubbles and allowed us to guess what the dragon was thinking. By letting Nick verbalize his thoughts, it saves us some speculation.
Of course most of us are still – will he or won’t he. 🙂
While I’m fairly certain that Scott will present a moment of doubt to the readers regarding Nic’s intentions after recovering, I believe that Nic isn’t truly evil and while he has made some poor choices in the past and taken some villainous actions, he really wants what’s best for Dreamland in the end and part of his moral failures was influenced by the selfish actions of previous kings of Dreamland. He’s already been impressed by Dan’s actions and intelligence so for that reason, I think Nic will support Dan once everything is said and done.
wait, Nic is immortal? where was this mentioned? I thought he was just long lived because he’s a dragon.
in either case, if the plant will not make him immortal, then I vote he takes it. For one thing, I really want to see him redeem himself. for the another thing, I also really want to see a dragon fight.
It’s interesting that Dan did not outright give it to Nic. He just kind of dropped it so that Nic could easily access it. it would be bad for him, as King, to say “hey, remember when I said I won’t pardon you? Still in effect, but save me please?”
Got the impression they were supposed to follow after healing tho? The healing was pretty quick in Alex’s case and Felicity doesn’t seem like somebody who’d hang around waiting. Is poisoning worse than blunt force trauma?
His dream body is choking and can’t breathe. And when Alex fought Nic toe to toe, his Earth body got bruised. It’s a two way street. And I assume if Dream Dan eats the leaf, Earth Dan will become unkillable and the beastie can choke him until the cows or Nicole comes home and it won’t make any difference.
I honestly think this page would work better with just the first speech bubble–Nic’s actions and expressions do enough to convey that he is considering eating it. Then we don’t have to wonder why he’s talking to himself.
Given the size differential, Nic will have to swallow the packet whole. I do not see him able to pull the tiny leaf out of the tiny packet with those immense talons.
Well, this is interesting… Let’s see how this plays out. Que in the dramatic music and change of scene!

You do realize if Dan’s Physical body was dead, his Dreamself would disappear, right?

I really hope he eats it. But I have a feeling something bad will happen when he’s talking.
And Gil seems to have already written Dan and Nic both off, preferring to focus on the whole plant, assuming it’s actually in there. Loving the suspense here!
Gil completely ignores the sword. He also is making the assumption that Dan is finished – a classic villain mistake.
I’m surprised that Gil is standing there as if nothing has happened. Shouldn’t he be diving for that satchel as well?
I don’t like where this is going….!
Can Nicodemus be trusted after consuming that plant????
Based on is position and the way he is facing, I am thinking that Gil has dismissed Dan as a threat and is going after the elves. So, it is probable that he did not even see it, trusting his minion to finish Dan off.
Come on Nichole.
Nic, monologue less! Redeem yourself more and stick the leaf in Dan’s mouth while there’s time!
Ok, that makes sense. 🙂

BUT, I kind of hope that it is in the pouch and that Nic eats it, because I want him to fight with Gil.
Would that do any good? I mean, Dan’s body is on Earth and is still under attack. Would eating the leaf with his dream body make any difference?

I agree. I don’t think it would work on Dan because it’s his dream self.
THAT would be epic!
Nick, number one rule of villiany: less monologue, more action! Now save Dan, and probably yourself by extension, before Gil gets it!
refresh my memory–does one have to eat the plant just one time to be immortal, or do they have to eat a bit of it every once in an era to stay immortal?
What if the plant is still in the real world?
Nick cannot help Dan. Nick exists in Dreamland while Dan is being choked in Wakeland (the real world).
If the leaf is there (Nick has reason to believe that it is) and if Nick eats it, it is likely Nick succumbing to the lure of power and possibly doing a Heel Turn.
Gil’s counter to Dan’s bargaining suggests that the leaf is powerful, but must take repeated applications for immortality.
The plant does not confer immortality in one dose. One leaf confers 100 years extended lifespan. Niviene has been been taking one each century waiting for Merlin. Dan told Gilgamesh that he would be furnished with one leaf per century to keep him alive if he agreed to call off the war. I suspect that in the end, Alex will heal Nick with the scabbard. IIRC, it was Alex that wounded him, so that would complete the cycle.
Conceivably, Alex’s sword could heal Nic too. So many possibilities here!
Oops, sword sheath!

Wow. I just re-read that first sentence… I think I got carried away trying to convey too much in a single sentence.

it could, but it’s with Felicity on Seraphopolis 😀
Probably. It looks like it could have been 3 sentences easily. 🙂
I’m not sure he intentionally dropped it. I got the impression from the art that it looked more like a fumble.
I suppose the real question is, why was he even fumbling with the pouch while he is being choked?
well…. unless Dan is good at slight of hand… otherwise the leaf is there: http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/comic/page-2020/
I thought Dan dropped the pouch by accident, not throw it away.
Just saying, I think Dreamland is capable of 2 grown people, because Gil lived before and while Arthur and many other kings lived
Got the impression they were supposed to follow after healing tho? The healing was pretty quick in Alex’s case and Felicity doesn’t seem like somebody who’d hang around waiting. Is poisoning worse than blunt force trauma?
Thanks for the link. That makes things clearer.
