That’s a conveniently large and deep tub that would make many people jealous or she is very short. 😛
With those 3 words I’m hoping we’re not too far away from an Evil Dead reference. 😛 Looking forward to more fun pages this week.
Her talking to Alex is a better proof, I guess. Merlin would most likely be speaking some kind of very outdated Welsh when a young man. Maybe some Latin and a bit of Anglo-Saxon, too, but English as we know it simply did not exist at the time.
I think she’s trying to get Dan to snap to about that plant. Either he needs it or she does, but apparently it is of utmost importance. And folks? Don’t forget about the beastie in the other room lest he come to and snatch it while you’re not looking.
Dan will have to realize that Nievene can’t stay in the tub for too long and that they’ll need to find another lake for her to dive in,maybe one that’s miles from any populated area?!?!?
Thereupon Gilgamish tied heavy stones to his feet, and let himself down into the sea through an opening in the floor of the boat. When he reached the bottom of the sea, he saw the plant and plucked it, and ascended into the boat with it. Showing it to Ur-Shanabi, he told him that it was a most marvellous plant, and that it would enable a man to obtain his heart’s desire. Its name was “Shbu issahir amelu,” i.e., “The old man becometh young again,” and Gilgamish declared that he would “eat of it in order to recover his lost youth,” and that he would take it home to his fortified city of Erech.
So… This might be old hat, since I haven’t been following the comments… But I finally have a guess as to the identity of the dreamer, the plant, the whole shebang….
Gilgamesh.
Shbu Issahir Amelu is the name of the plant of immortality that Gilgamesh sought to capture. And it was instead eaten by a giant serpent. This serpent could either be the eternally living Nicodemus, OR it could be the actual serpent in the cave that Nievene led the nightmares to in the cave – meaning that it wasn’t a lie, technically – the plant WAS inside the serpent.
So Gilgamesh being the first king makes plenty of sense – the Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest stories of humanity, echoing the biblical accounts of much of Genesis.
AAAAND I just saw that Matt already beat me to the punch with his copy pasta. Drat. I was feeling clever for once…
“Lady of the Bathtub” doesn’t have the same ring to it as “Lady of the Lake”… 🙂
And they still haven’t had time to tell Dan “Your thickheaded brother pulled Niviene out of Dreamland through the Portal, then jumped into Dreamland himself. The Portal has collapsed in a big boom. The pond down the hill is gone. We don’t know if your brother is still alive, but if so he’s loose in Dreamland in his real body and with Excalibur to boot. We expect hilarity to ensue.”
Niviene can convert herself to an air breather with legs. We saw this during her time in Camelot. She just needs to have the strength to do it. Right now, however, she is magically exhausted. Perhaps she is asking for some Sibu Issahir Amelu so she can make the transformation.
oh, that must be how she’s stayed so young for so long, by taking bits of the plant to restore her. Abaddon mentioned she looked awfully young for a mermaid her age. but how much of it must be left by now? can she cultivate more? what termperate zone does Sibu Issahir Amelu do best in and does Miracle -Gro make plant food for mystical plants of legend?
I thought the name sounded familiar. It had been used before in other sources of literature, but the origin was the Epic of Gilgamesh.
I was thinking that Merlin could actually be Utnapishtim (who is probably Noah from the Bible because their story is very similar) because of the immortality thing. Utnapishtim ate the plant but Gilgamesh’s was stolen.
I was thinking the dreamer might be “Etana” who was first king of Sumer (Kish) and lived in 3000 BC
As for the exact cause of her current state, there’s a lot of possibilities that come to mind. Forced through a magic portal she created and was probably still magically linked to when it collapsed, out of her world and out of her element… what could go wrong?

Yep, her hair is under a hair spell. It keeps its curls both under the water and out of it. maybe now she can explain what is in the pot.
I’m still wondering if the Dan w/ Titania and Oberon loophole has been explained.
“Sibu issahir amelu… and also your tap water sucks… Is this lead? You put lead in your tap water? Somebody get me a brita or something!”
Daniel, she doesn’t speak English!
Maybe that wrist-grab will be enough to impart the translation spell. If not…well…

You gotta kiss de girl…

She speaks English. I mean, she met Merlin, fercryinoutloud.
Jealous 😛
Remember when Alex and everyone were having tails too, they were the same length

Gilgamish and the Plant of Immortality

C’mon lady. You can speak English. The elf lady has it in her hands. Just tell them what you want!

never mind. I just reread through the archives. It’s been so long that I forgot.

Oh man, that third panel, with some of her hair still floating above water… it’s just SO AWESOME. I don’t know why I find it so striking, but… <3
🙂
It’s one of my favs too.
🙂
Agreed!

It was very well done <3
I’m guessing it’s because she’s in the real world, that she can only speak ancient Celtic?
The phrase is in Sumerian, I think.
As for the exact cause of her current state, there’s a lot of possibilities that come to mind. Forced through a magic portal she created and was probably still magically linked to when it collapsed, out of her world and out of her element… what could go wrong?
Maybe it is a common plant in our world that works for her. Like, y’know, parsley or something.
Speaking of boom… wonder if anyone in the neighbourhood heard it and called the police..?
Something else for you to Google, Daniel.
I always assumed the plant is still growing.
I think she would be more worried about the chlorine than the lead. Also, low salt content.
