the grip on her arm suggests he’s going to pull her through, but the expression on panel 4 suggests he’s about to do exactly what she said not to.
Both are….*possible* I guess……
This sequence doesn’t quite make sense. Alex takes the sheath and puts Excalibur inside. Meanwhile, Niviene, who has almost all of Abaddon still in Dreamland heading towards her like a freight train, just stays by the Portal with her hand sticking out of the pond? She doesn’t take off the moment Alex has the sheath but instead stays in place, insuring her capture and probable death? It might work if Alex slipped Excaliber in the sheath while she was still holding it, then pulled it out of her grasp, reached down, and grabbed her hand. But it’s not clear that’s what happened. Am I missing something? Or being hyper-critical?
It was supposed to be simultaneous.
Maybe I’ll ask Tracy to redo the first panel so he’s putting the sword into the sheath while Niviene still holds it in her hand?
Maybe while reaching for her arm with his free hand.
Oh, way to leave us dangling by a tree branch over the edge of a cliff with alligators in the swamp far below the the soil eroding around the tree branch… on a Friday.
And you expect us to be able to SLEEP this weekend?
This we call “effective dramatic pause”. ;D
Yeah…I had the same thought. Even if he just was intending to grab her wrist so he gets pulled through when she pulls back, he’d still have to get a kiss from her before Abaddon tore her away or he’d drown.
That’s assuming he’s actually trying to help her and not take advantage of the situation to help himself (which yes, I know, means he’s trying to help another lady in the form of Nastajia, but that would still mean taking advantage of another lady in trouble).
Scott, the pacing would work better, but it wouldn’t really make sense for Alex to do that. Niv needs him to take the scabbard and scarper, but instead he takes the time to sheathe the sword while it’s in her hand? I’m sorry, but I just don’t see it given the urgency presented.
How about this idea:
in the previous page we already know Alex is about to grab the scabbard, so this page could actually be just 2 panels–the top one is Alex with the scabbard in one hand and Niv’s hand in the other. (personally speaking if I were to thumbnail this, I would probably put Niv’s hand in the foreground so we are seeing Alex from below) The second panel is your current bottom one with the apology with his FANTASTIC expression (really very nice, Tracy!)
Unless you really need to show the sword being sheathed for some reason?
Is the sword glowing within the sheath? And if so, is that just the proximity of Abaddon on the other side of the portal that’s causing it? Or is it supposed to just be one of those “sword and sheath are once again rejoined and the angels sang for joy” kind of things? Or is there some more Abaddon approaching on the Earth side of the portal (in which case Alex is about to make a stupid mistake by leaving behind the precious “must be protected” items with only two folks to protect them)?
I agree. My first reaction was, why is he sheathing the sword now and why is Nivene’s hand still out.
But I guess IF he’s planning to jump in after her, if he didn’t sheath the sword first, he won’t have a free hand? So that means he either can’t grab her hand or he’d have to leave sword or scabbard behind? He COULD just grab her hand instead of grabbing the scabbard. Whether he decides to jump in after her or pull her over, if she’s holding the scabbard and Alex is holding her hand, he’d end up on the same side as the scabbard and can sheath the sword later.
And for future reference, maybe a diagonal split panel side by side would be better at conveying “happening simultaneously”?
I’d say he grabs her wrist while she is still holding the scabbard…depending on what happens next, he can do whatever smooth move he is planning, then grab the scabbard afterwards and have the sword in one hand, the scabbard in the other.
If I had someone like Nastajia who loved me, and the only way I would ever be able to be with her again is to risk destroying the world… Good luck, world. Here’s to hoping you don’t blow up! *jumps through the portal*
Let me guess… Alex is going to take a swan dive.
He either jumps in with the sword (he passed the pot over already) or he pulls her through.
Judging by the grip, I’d say pulls her through.
why not both? I can see them passing each other thru portal, he slinging her to safety while flinging himself right into the frying pan…
I have a feeling she’s going to lose her arm.
Called it 😉
Why do I get the feeling that Alex is going to do something stupid?
….. Again.
Stupid and brave are a fine line. I mean what would you do if you saw a lady in trouble?
But if she can only breathe in water…
Will Alex pull her through, thus saving Niviene from a fate worse than death or dive in himself?
why not both?
And don’t forget to exchange a kiss on the way in so that he doesn’t drown.
Ah yes, it’s “cliffhanger Friday” again. 🙂
he’d have to find a way to kiss her passing through so he can breathe underwater :\
the grip on her arm suggests he’s going to pull her through, but the expression on panel 4 suggests he’s about to do exactly what she said not to.

Would that make it work better?
Yes – have her still holding onto the sheath would make more sense. Thanks!

Feels like there was a page (or at least a panel or two) missing here.
Yeah…I had the same thought. Even if he just was intending to grab her wrist so he gets pulled through when she pulls back, he’d still have to get a kiss from her before Abaddon tore her away or he’d drown.

Oh…I didn’t get that it was supposed to be simultaneous at all. I think a redo might be necessary. :/
Is the sword glowing within the sheath? And if so, is that just the proximity of Abaddon on the other side of the portal that’s causing it? Or is it supposed to just be one of those “sword and sheath are once again rejoined and the angels sang for joy” kind of things? So he is about to destroy this portal, by passing through… nice.
I agree. My first reaction was, why is he sheathing the sword now and why is Nivene’s hand still out.

Alex, please, do the right thing, just pull her up, save her from Abaddon. Please don’t try to swap positions.
Mermaids are usually amphibious as far as breath is concerned.
It can be both. Love makes one do drastic measures. Face it there is love.
ooh, grabbing her hand instead of the scabbard is a very good idea!
I’m confused. I thought Excalibur was the dreamland sword, that’s with his brother. What’s this sword? I may have to go back and reread.
Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.
Especially you, Tifa.I’d say he grabs her wrist while she is still holding the scabbard…depending on what happens next, he can do whatever smooth move he is planning, then grab the scabbard afterwards and have the sword in one hand, the scabbard in the other.
The sword in Dreamland is called the Sword of Kings. This sword is Excalibur from Arthurian legend.
If I had someone like Nastajia who loved me, and the only way I would ever be able to be with her again is to risk destroying the world… Good luck, world. Here’s to hoping you don’t blow up! *jumps through the portal*
Ha ha. EXACTLY!
Pull her through! Save her Alexander!
Pull her out, kiss her and then jump into the pool to fight a horde of nightmare realmers.
Yeah, that sounds like a dumb enough plan.
The kiss is so he can breath underwater.
Other than his mom, it’s not like he has much left to lose.
1 part brave, 3 parts fool.
Because everything Alex does is “something stupid”.
