The truth is, everything Nicodemus says here is perfectly logical. But it’s also a trap option โย it cements Nicodemus back into a co-leadership position, and Alex really isn’t “King;” he’s not a strategist, and there are plenty of reasons why Nick can’t be trusted and why he shouldn’t be trusted. Alex WANTS to do the right thing, but here’s a case where the right thing โย saving Dreamland โย could come at the cost of an equally wrong thing โย allowing Nick free, staying as King of Dreamland, etc.
Alex needs advisory support; he can’t make decisions like this, that effect all of Dreamland, on his own. It’s not a do or do not, it’s a can or cannot situation. Hence, “I can’t.”
Now that’s just a rough way to end a story segment. ๐ Now I have a feeling it has more to do than not wanting to work with Nic though. Everybody’s been telling him that he isn’t the king, that he can’t lead dreamland, and he just lost Nastajia. His self esteem is about as low as it’s ever been in his entire life right now. And I think THAT is why he say’s that he can’t… ๐
Can’t or won’t? ๐ Why isn’t his answer, “Umm…sure…if you’ll help me find and rescue Nastajia…and then I have to talk to her parents who think I’m not supposed to be king either…and then I have to talk to Nastajia who wants me to prove my right to stay king…and then I have to talk to Niviene, who also thinks I’m not supposed to be king…and somehow I have to make everyone happy while also giving my brother a shot at visiting here…tough stuff! ๐
I’m very curious as to why he said that. He is king of Dreamland, but not dictator of Dreamland…maybe that’s why. His decision would affect so many people…he’ can’t just make that decision for everyone. A very mature response, really. Especially considering Nicodemous’s history and his Zod-like passion for Dreamland.
You know, I think it’s more “I can’t because I’m not really the king”, rather than “I can’t because I don’t trust you”. I think Navani, Oberon, and Titania are getting to him, along with his self doubt about not being able to protect Nastajia.
You know, I just read the last 4 or 5 pages all today, and I’m thinking: This would be an awesome plan for the enemy if Nic was just faking. He’s already had an opportunity to kill Alex, although I would wait for a better time to turn traitor. ๐ Just saying… and thinking. ๐
I think it would be a lot more dramatic with a period at the end of “I can’t.” It gives the statement gravity, finality, and purpose. Something that Alex has been lacking, but here we see him thinking for himself. With periods!
I think he realizes that if they hope to win the battle against Abaddon, it must be Daniel who leads the way. Alex is putting aside his own selfish desires (to remain in Dreamland where he fits in better than in the waking world, to stay with the woman he loves, etc.) over what is best for Dreamland and Earth. It is really his moment…but maybe that is what makes him the best choice to rule? We shall see!
“I can’t because Dreamland is not my home. Earth is. I have to stop the invasion of Earth and close the gate, while you defend Dreamland. Once the gate is destroyed, then maybe I can help you.”
I can’t cause I have to give the sword to my brother when I wake up. Or I can’t make this decision on my own. There are delegates on their way. Lets go discuss with them after we save Nastajia
You know, considering this is still going on in the Nightmare realm, surely Abbadon is able to hear all of this conversation still going on, and yet they’re not attacking Nicodemus for his treachery?
Something smells fishy, (and I’m not talking about the contents of Niviene’s Apple Crumble…)
I know I’m a year and a half behind the conversation on this page, but I had to chime in anyway. I think everyone is over-thinking Alex’s motivations here: the most important thing in the world to him is the love of his life, Nastajia. I believe he would sacrifice everything to rescue her first. THAT’S why he says “I can’t”, IMHO.
Nastajia will yell at me ๐
WHAT??!!
Do or do not. There is not “I can’t.”
Sigh… *no*. Of all the times to have typos.
First things first. There is Nastajia – and a promise to a certain Queen and King if I do remember correctly. and as always: Pure Cliffhanger. Ouch!
This was the big testing moment for Alex.

You’ve got a good theory there too. Maybe he is thinking better than I think he is. ๐
You “did not.” ๐
Yeah…this is pretty much what I was thinking…
Can’t or won’t? ๐ Why isn’t his answer, “Umm…sure…if you’ll help me find and rescue Nastajia…and then I have to talk to her parents who think I’m not supposed to be king either…and then I have to talk to Nastajia who wants me to prove my right to stay king…and then I have to talk to Niviene, who also thinks I’m not supposed to be king…and somehow I have to make everyone happy while also giving my brother a shot at visiting here…tough stuff! ๐

Then Nic takes the sword back.

*Niviene. I meant Niviene. Been reading The Way of Kings recently…

WHAT!? WHY!? Is he seriously going to let his pride come before everyone else?!
This is a change for Alex, not helping Nicodemus against Abaddon.

That’s what I’d read it as.

thanks for the sword kthxbai
Looks like he will finish that sentence on the next page.
I wonder if the “I can’t” is conditional and he needs Dan to be at his side. Then again, Chessrook44 makes a good point.
I have a feeling it has to do with what Nimue said about abdicating the throne of Dreamland to Dan.
