I have the feeling – ever since the last page of the previous chapter – that Nic rather wants to work WITH Alex than fight him.
Soon we will see if I’m right, or if I’m just delirious as usual… 🙂

but yeah, bezman, i’m thinking somebody’s ready to play nice for a while, at least, like he did with arthur, until dun dun dun…betrayal! bc obviously the human king is the one who will be easily accepted by dreamland-ers, and nicodemus has already been overthrown.
It does sound like there’s potentially been a huge shift here. Nic’s merely acknowledging that the sword chose Alex to rule Dreamland is an astounding thing all by itself. Take note, Nivien (sp?).i’m dying to see if the sword will boggle him further by explaining it’s own point of view regarding who is deserving of the throne, who isn’t, and why. This is a great page for what it portends!

Technically, that’s not who the Sword of Kings chose. That’s just who everybody else SAYS should rule Dreamland. And their reasoning is usually based purely on the fact that Dan is the “firstborn” of the King Arthur line; i.e., older by no more than a few MINUTES (they’re fraternal twins).
If Dreamlanders argued that Daniel should be king because he clearly demonstrates the brains and wisdom to rule… then it’d be more difficult to dismiss. But, from what I recall, they usually don’t say anything about that. (Except for Nicole. But she isn’t even a Dreamlander.)
Keep in mind: The only reason the Sword of Kings was in a position to choose a successor was because, as a child, Alex was drawn to that hidden Tomb of Kings where King Arthur was trapped between life and death. If it wasn’t for Alex, King Arthur and the Sword would still be trapped in that cave. And, being the firstborn, Daniel was unable to even visit Dreamland as long as King Arthur still lived. Never mind how, years later, he was pivotal in overthrowing Nicodemus.
That said, I suspect that by the end of the story we will see Alex pass the sword over to Daniel. Though, Alex clearly has an important role to play yet. And I think they’ll find a way for him to stay with Nastajia, even without the Sword.
I’m with Rachel on this one. I’d prefer if Alex came across as forceful instead of hesitant. More like a “This is what I’ve got so I’m gonna use it” than the current “uhhhhhh”.

Nicodemus: Because David had a sling and accuracy with ranged weapons, you’re a hack’n’slash flailer. Plus, I’m a dragon, not a giant with a weak skull.
Alex: Ohhh… What about?
Nicodemus: Enough… Just sit down before you fall down.
I think my favorite part about this page is the look that Alex is giving the rock. It almost looks like Alex is expecting the rock to say something in rebuttal.
This is almost correct, except that they don’t need to be for the line of King Arthur, as that’s often not how future kings get selected (Arthur not being descended from Caesar, Caesar not being from David, etc.). The worst part is that it is based on Daniel being the older sibling, and Alex showing that he is able to wield the sword. Yes, that is correct, the way they know that “Daniel is the rightful king” is because Alex can wield the sword and still enter Dreamland while being an adult as a result.
I don’t know if you’ve ever mentioned this before, but of all the characters, Nic is the only one I have ever wondered about Character voice. Whose voice do you imagine with Nicholas? I have two potential voices, that of Jeremy Irons or Alan Rickman.
I actually thought Alex had put a little more thought into this. He’s in Dreamland, even if the Nightmare Realm. I was expecting him to pick up the rock with the idea of throwing it using both strength and speed. Functionally, that ought to give him the impact of a small howitzer at least – and he can do it without having to get near Nicodemus.
Okay, I love everything about TDC’s but this page is my favorite! No matter how many times I look at it, I chortle, snort and guffaw like it is the very first time. Quick, here’s my checkbook, just take my money and send me a print worthy of framing! ROFCSGMBO!
