Might I suggest a few Fwish here and there with a larger font for the closer ones and a smaller one for the background spears. For depth of course. I’d also suggest a small “gulp” to go with that “oh shit look our lovely heroine makes as she realizes her mistake.
I’m sure the spears traveling through the air would be silent to our ears, though maybe not to a tigrin’s ears – there has to be a reason a tigrin could avoid them – there might be a ‘clunk’ and ‘twang’ sound from behind a wall as they launched – in the first panel – if the launcher was mechanical, but I would expect them to be powered by magic, and thus silent also – or there would be a lot of spears left laying around on the floor from previous attempts.
I think that NOT having any sound effects in the second panel is the most effective.
The insert panel with the wide eyes needs a little ping – ping-ping in the background. The larger panel needs no sound effect and a blur on the spear so it would like the get away is in super slow motion.
first step, not so good.
I agree with those saying no sound effect necessary, the message comes across loud and clear already!
and i love the panel layout on this page. I know you usually opt for a vertical four panel page, so it’s nice to see you switch it up once in a while.
I always wonder about these booby-trapped scenarios. She can’t be the first person to trigger those spears, but who reloaded the spears and reset the floor trigger after those other guys? 🙂
I’m not sure if she needs to be more careful, or she’s being as careful and cautious as she can, the traps are just better than she is, and it’s all going to come down to her reflexes and speed to escape death…
I think ‘sssssssf’ would be appropriate, with the initial s’s being smaller and the f’s being larger. This should heighten the feeling of closeness to Felicity’s pretty fur/hair/skin.
It could be a self-loading trap that is designed to reset 4-5 times. Like how a semi-auto pistol automatically kicks out the spent casing and loads the next bullet.
I just want to say, Scott, that if the sequence of Felicity breaking into the temple does not include the phrase “Snakes… Why did it have to be snakes?” I am going to be HIGHLY disappointed in you.
I’m thinking a fast shink shink shink sound, mostly because i have been play WAY too much Skyrim and that’s kind of the sound they make in the Barrow ruins when I trigger traps in there.
I’ll throw in for leave it as it is. Silent no sound effect spears work great. I think it adds to the terror and really pushes the”holy moly I almost died!” feeling Felicity must be feeling right now. The facial expressions say it all.
The last sound she hears is a click, gulp face, epic dodge. Perfect.
The spears themselves should only produce a slight swooshing sound that should be barely audible.
The LAUNCHER is what would make the greatest noise, and the power behind the noise should be based on the speed of the spears.
A “SHWUMP!” in micropanel two sounds sufficient to drive 5 spears at near-horizontal speeds at a distance. Then, in panel 4, a simple, soft ‘fffwt” around the spears should be good as well.
SHTERRG! FWOOP FWOOP WOOP-WOOP!
Honestly, I think it’s scarier this way…
FWOO; just one effect in the last panel.
I notice someone else has suggested FWOOP; close enough 😛

Woohoo! Free spears!
Grab one, Felicity, it’s always useful to have a ten-foot pole in a dungeon.
Kssshhhhh – I think that’s how they sounded in the Indiana Jones movies.
I’m going with thwip! thwip!
It’s kind of a rapid thweh-hwuup noise. So for the sake of space, I would say thwoop, thwiip, or thwehoop.
And yes, I have just spent the last 5 minutes making spear shooting noises. XD
Pfft
Or something like that. One need something with a T sound as they were properly spring loaded.
Do you need sound effects on this one? I didn’t miss them and the effect of them coming out fast was perfectly clear.
THWOOSH, maybe? Gets the spring-loaded sound and also the whipping through the air hissing noise.
Well, this didn’t start good…
“Here goes nothing…” and there goes Felicity. Looks like she’ll have her work cut out for her.
‘Phutt’
that is all.
Dat Face…LOL!!!
I’ll second this one!
In Skyrim they make a shing shing sort of noise. And yes, i stand on traps too often…
Third.
Actually a sound effect is not really needed here because just about everyone reading it filled in their own instinctively.
FFFFFFFT ZHHHHHHT ZJNNNNG KTK KTK
Thwang! Perhaps maybe Thwiiip! or Ka Twang.
I am also in favor of no sound effects. Silent but deadly 😉
How about FWOOSH! Or maybe some of the sound effects used in manga or anime?
Oh, you said it. That expression is priceless!
“ekke ekke ekke ekke ptang zoo boing!”
Kudos to those who get the reference.
SFFFFF sounds about right in my head 😀
I think it’s better visually without any kind of sound effect bubbles.

People! Please!
While you are all ex-speariment with sound effects, our heroine is ex-speariencing great danger!
The guides on the Jungle Cruise either make a ‘pfft’ sound, or they just say, “spear spear spear!”
I guess she never watched any Indiana Jones movies.

I’m on board with pfft.
I’d go for a good o’l Cthunk.
Not ‘Thwiip’; that’s the sound Spiderman’s web spinners make.
I always wonder about these booby-trapped scenarios. She can’t be the first person to trigger those spears, but who reloaded the spears and reset the floor trigger after those other guys? 🙂
Wait! Wait!… she doesn’t have a hat for the narrowly beating the closing door scene!
that…is a very good question 0_0
semi automatic spears?
I’m not sure if she needs to be more careful, or she’s being as careful and cautious as she can, the traps are just better than she is, and it’s all going to come down to her reflexes and speed to escape death…
I see what you did there.
Do we have a Pun Jar or Penalty Box people have to make sin offerings to when they do this?
I second this.

None. Her expression says it all.
(IMHO, Her right leg looks a bit long.)

No sound effect needed, imo. 🙂

Silent spears. Much more deadly. But Felicity, with the agility of the cat that she is, easily evades them.
Hah, WAY too easy! MPaTHG, tKwsN… so I don’t spoil it to much.
Monty Python ref FTW!!!
Fwtsssh!
It makes it sound like a spring loaded spear being shot out.
And like Exxos, I too have been making shooting spear noises for 5 minutes.
But I also like the idea of no sound effects… but at the same time as a casual reader, I would wonder where they are.
Hmmmm…I have the sound in my head, but no way to type it….hmmm….”Swoom”? O_o I dunno…

Without SFX, it looks like a freezeframe. (i.e. the camera has stopped rolling to show us how dramatic the pose and action is)
“Wombats. Why did it have to be wombats?” 🙂
Aw. Thanks all! My boys and I laughed at all of the SFX you posted. Making all the sounds out loud.
You guys are the best!
FSSST came to mind immediately.

look on her face rofl
I usually go with ‘SHFFFT’ for spears. Bit like a blowpipe sound, but larger! 😀
The first one to occur to me was SWFFF or just WFFF, but many of the others suggested or leaving it as is would work fine as well.
I think silent is fine, but the spears should have some serious motion blur going on. That would be impact enough, I should think.
Well, I doubt they have movie theaters in Dreamland. But still, she’s obviously genre-savvy enough to know that “click” is a bad thing.
“Didn’t you hear that click?”
” ‘That click’…like the kind you hear before ka-boom?”
Hah, that’s small change, lets just take their soul instead…

Some motion blur would make this scene even better.
On the spears, I mean. So that they don’t look suspended in midair.
I still think it’s funny that she tripped it with her VERY FIRST STEP. That’s not gonna look good on her Master Thief resume. =)
My mind filled in a far away shTwang. Fantastic page for the start of her private adventure.
Too late!
Evil: 90% other peoples’ pain & suffering,
10% Puns!
“Third” only works if one if them hits.
Nih!
Clearly a sprong for each spear
