The look on Dan’s face tells me he wasn’t expecting to be pitted against his brother.
Dan: “… Oh fudge..”
Hell hath no fury like a woman standing up in defense of her man…
That’s nothing to do with protecting. ^^ Two different pair of shoes, dear Nicole. *gg* Thou’ as a matter of fact, Alex prolly wouldna have come up with a plan that elaborate (if at all). Besides, Alex’ little piece of bold talk is not completely true. ^^ He’s had lots of help. Orion, the dwarves, Orion, his old gang, Orion, … what ever.
True, but Nicole clearly isn’t thinking things through. If Dan becomes King, she’ll lose him… and there’s still the fact that the sword picked… chose… found (?) Alex. If there is anything to Destiny (or Fate… or what have you), Alex is meant to be King. If Dan becomes King, there will be two sets of star-crossed lovers. At any rate, Alex is who I’m rooting for. Even with the cast of characters involved, this has been his story we’ve been reading.
Of course, it’s possible (given some of the things brought up during the story… and the fact that authors can do as they please) that there may be a way for Dan to become King without our two sets of lovers becoming star-crossed.
Because they’re not really talking about the same thing Alex’s “bold talk” is technically true. Alex protecting Nastajia (or at least watching her back) has very little to do with the battle plans to take down Nicodemus and win back the capital. They’re talking apples and oranges.
And I still say this whole business is stupid, even if other parties haven’t been “witness” to what Alex has done or is capable of doing. It’s as if everyone except Daniel has forgotten how to think clearly.
I’m calling it now. King and Queen Elf aren’t actually Nastajia’s parents, but rather nightmare realm spies that are taking their form. Thus the setup to get on Dan’s side and thus the asinine insistence that Dan take over from Alex.
I only hope Dan would ask for some explanations. Granted, the sword was meant to be his, but why all the rush all of a sudden?
hehe – I’d rather put the sword’s choice as “rather stick with Alex for the time being than being stuck in that damned cavern forever” – not as summad final.
Dan: O.O
Yeah, to him, it might sound like his brother suddenly taking all the glory. Somehow it feels similar to how things were before the Dreamland business.
Ach. And now we see the beginning of the breakdown. My theory is that everyone but Dan is going to argue for a while before Dan cuts in with his common sense and calm things down. But by then Staj is captured and from there…I dunno. I hate it when the good guys bicker among themselves. It’s understandable yes, but it brings out the ugly side of them. Methinks things are going to get heated in that bedroom (no not THAT way) for a while. I guess I’ll go back to my hermit cave and come back here in a week or two when a buffer comes up so I can breeze through this scene.
Oh wow…if that’s the case, it would be brilliant.
Think about it, you three. Dan hasn’t trained himself to fly, have super strength, etc. There’s also no guarantee that he’ll be wearing the armour when he enters Dreamland. AND if he enters where Nastajia is, he’s going to be in the Nightmare Realm.
Think about that for a moment. Your “true” king, trapped in the middle of the most dangerous place he could be in, without superpowers and potentially without any sort of defence other than the Sword.
WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA?????
A big argument about to happen
Even though Dan came up with the plans to take Astoria but it was Alex that pulled them off, right?
What kind of king would Daniel be if he’s never been to Dreamland?
A king who has no familiarity with the land he’s ruling! It’s enough to have Aurthur turn up alive! 😉
Time for Alex to say “I’ll sleep on it”.
Not helping, Nicole. 🙁
It’s possible. But then, why intervene before, when the Nightmare Realm creatures had Dan and Nicole on the ropes and were about to kill them both, having taken out Niviene? (I wonder what happened to her…) That would have ended the menace of him ever being King while really messing up Alex. I suspect Oberon and Titania ARE Oberon and Titania. But making bad decisions…
I’m waiting for Mom to walk in because of all the noise.
Where she will recognize the King and Queen from her time in Dreamland.
Could be wishful thinking…
Hahahaha!! Good point! 😀 I bet the sword was bored in there. 😛
I agree with eee on this one…minus the “making bad decisions” part. I don’t think what Oberon is proposing is inherently a bad decision…just a poorly timed one. The conversation about who should take the throne should be saved for after everyone is safely out of the Nightmare Realm. 🙂
I’m not a fan of good-guy in-fighting either, but it helps show that they’re not perfect…not even the king and queen of the elves (though it’s worth noting that Titania didn’t weigh in on the “give up the throne to Daniel now” idea).
Awkward conversation/fight time. 🙁
Scott actually pointed out in a comment yesterday that the “TRUE king” would be more powerful and better suited to everything than a stand-in/temporary king…so Dan would be super strong and powerful…probably able to fly since he knows from Alex how that works (and what prevents flight from happening). The best reason I’ve heard (so far) why it’s a bad idea to make the switch now is the point that Alex made in today’s page…Dan wouldn’t necessarily appear right where Alex disappeared, so he wouldn’t know how to find Nastajia.
He wouldn’t have absolutely zero familiarity with Dreamland. Remember, he chronicled his brother’s adventures there for a long time…and has been closely involved in the current happenings in Dreamland. He’s essentially studied the place and its inhabitants as best he can from this world, and has longed for Dreamland like no other person could. 🙂 Granted, study only gets you so far…but I think Dan would be a good ruler (when the time is right).
I love how Nicole completely forgets that Alex is the one who pulled those plans off, and everyone knows “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy”. While Dan may have made the initial plans it’s Alex who pulled them off even after that to make the taking of Astoria successful.
yeah, I’m thinking so too. Sow seeds of dissent among them, get Dan into Dreamland defenseless and it’s game over.
Besides, yeah, foreshadowed nightmare guys down by the lake. Place your bets ladies and gentlemen…
kind of a “guys who built the rocket” versus Neil and Buzz, huh 🙂
Ah, but Nicole wouldn’t lose Dan at all — he’d only be in Dreamland ruling when he was asleep. She’d have him during his waking day, like everyone else and their sweetie.
Someone remind me — when did the *sword* say that Dan was rightful king of Dreamland? Nastajia mentioned this a few pages ago, but I can’t remember when that happened…. :/
Wait, Nicole is there? Did we know that already and I just forgot?
I get that Dan is meant to be the king, but some of these people are being really rude to Alex about it. He’s not a child or a simpleton and he’s done all the hard work so far, how about talking to him with respect?
Alex:”Yes, Nicole dear – that’s called DELEGATION OF ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS… an important ability of a true King!” 😉
Enter Mom. ‘Alex, give the necklace to your brother, quick. Eeeek!’ (Mom sees the Elves and faints.)
Alex dials 911. Click. ‘Give the sword to Dan. Can I help you?’
Alex looks out of the window only to see a crowd of zombies mooing, ‘Saaawd… Daaaan…’
A policeman comes crashing through the door. ‘Give the sword to Dan! Do it! Do it now!.. Huh… Where am I?’
All nearby TVs switch themselves on. ‘…that Alex Carter must give the sword to his brother immediately. No questions. No reasoning. Blind obedience, or we start killing kittens. Also making the headlines today…’
Yeah, I think I’ll just wait a week or so and come back. Maybe the scene will make more sense when it’s not done a page at a time, but right now I’m still wondering why they’re even talking about this now, when there are so many other things that to me should have come up first. The need to help Nastajia, where have these two been anyways, anything at all related to the portal. This silly birthright thing is pretty far down on the list of “things that need to be dealt with now and immediately”.
Not sure if it has ever been established, but it always bugged me that they never experimented with the sword necklace. Find out what happens if someone else wore it to sleep.
IDK, maybe Arthur’s time in Dreamland is what caused Guinevere to stray and caused the whole mess in Camelot? Kinda an interesting theory.
They actually tried it with Nicole once. Orion went postal.
Why can’t they get it through their heads that the brothers work best as a team? Dan has the brains, yes, but he doesn’t have the in-the-moment instinct to protect himself in battle. Alex is like a liason, a bodyguard, a general. By technically holding the title of “king” he can exist within dreamland, WHERE HE SHOULD BE! If Dan were king, he’d be assassinated within the hour, Alex would have to take the throne back, and Dreamland would crumble at the first big battle.
FINALLY, Alex stands up for himself. 🙂 Go, lad go!
Dan will back him up. Though I find it interesting to learn that the “true” king would have more natural powers in Dreamland than his proxy.
I’m surprised that no one has mentioned that NASTAJIA DOES MOST OF THE SAVING IN THIS STORY! They’re talking about her as if she’s some kind of damsel in distress. She’s probably already taken out another Nightmare Realm patrol while waiting for Alex to come back.
The argument nobody is making here yet is “Does Dan have to marry Nastajia if he becomes King of Dreamland?” That’s a situation that wouldn’t make anyone happy. Nicole should really think about that before jumping in to tear down Alex.
Just a moment ago, the doorbell rang, and i got a package from the USA. from Donna.
Thank you very much. It looks very nice. Now i want the other chapters as well 🙁
I’m envious. Hope my Paddington and book shows today 🙂
Nastajia started the argument. And now Nicole (apparently to Dan’s surprise) is now continuing it. Originally the guys would’ve never argued. Anyone else think the guys never wanted to get involved?… Maybe Alex did once he realized about Nastajia. I wonder if he’ll eventually tell the parents soon that they’re going out…. can’t wait to see how this turns out!…. lol
I think this page is important, maybe exactly the information you’re looking for (although it is just one page of the long storie the sword is telling on that moment) Cause it say “Alex is king”
http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/comic/page-1139/
(wooh, i’ve readed around 400 pages for this O.o )
The respect part is what bothers me the most about the “give up the sword” proponents in the comic.
It’s almost as if none of them realize that it’s a really big sacrifice, or have any interest in appropriate timing for either the action or request. Almost as if talking to a kid (but then, even if you’re talking to a kid about giving up his favourite toy, I’d say that requires more tact and understanding required than shown in this dialog).
And then on the other side of the argument, Nastajia obviously doés ralize it’s a big sacrifice…
Personally I don’t care if Alex gives up the sword or not, since I’m confidant that Scott will handle the outcome satisfactory. But the way the proponent characters insist on Alex relinquishing the sword (no proper explanation, little empathy shown, etc.) feels at odds with the rest of the story. (One would expect at least a hint of compassion from the side of wise good guys…)
I wonder if this might be intentional, a glitch of some sort, or a side effect of reading it one page at a time.
Wow. Okay, I’ve just caught up on the entire series in one afternoon, so my head’s a little full.
That being said, WOW! This series has made leaps and bounds since I last read, and I’m so happy to see it’s still going! I too am a little confused by the king’s words, but I suppose we’ll see what’s coming?
I can’t wait to see more now that I’m current ^^
Actually Julie, what I meant was is that Dan is NOT familiar with the geography of Dreamland physically! Dan would go into a panic if he can’t locate Nastajia in the vast world of the Nightmare Realm.
Actually, I was just thinking that about Nastajia. Alex is, barely, a better fighter than she is (and only in certain situations), mostly because of his training with dreamer magic such as flight, strength, and so on, as well as being equipped with powerful weapons and armor. Of course, she ends up on top depending on the situation. Helps to have ranged weapon expertise taken care of when he’s got melee.
And she outclasses him in every other way. She’s got more experience, more knowledge, more education, thinks quicker on the fly, is better-known (especially before the two of them took Nicodemus down), and already rules a region in Dreamland. The issue shouldn’t be “who would be the best king between the brothers”, it should be “who would be the best ruler overall”, and she wins that question hands down.
Of course, this only adds more support for Alex, because if he’s the current king of all Dreamland by right of royal blood and he’s courting her, she would become the queen of all Dreamland by completely legitimate means.
Alex. Just go back to sleep. Now.
It’s not so much that, it’s more that Alex can’t enter dreamland without the sword, so unless they get the portals running, there would be no way for Alex and Nastajia to be together once Alex has handed the necklace over to Daniel.
Nicole, we’re not talking about Dreamland as a whole….
Nastajia doesn’t have to marry anyone. She’s ruler of the elves. That doesn’t make her the required queen of Dreamland.
I really think the brothers expect things to work out, or at least cross that bridge when they come to it. There’s no need for transition of power right now.
Poydras, I agree completely!
+1
Interesting thought… if Alex could prove himself a worthy King, would he get a power boost as confirmation? Also, if he and Dan found a way to share the throne, would each be half as powerful as past kings?
That bugged me- Nastajia said the sword declared Dan king, but three pages after the one you linked it explicitly calls Alex the king of Dreamland. Not acting king or steward or regent or anything- king. Even if it later did call Dan the same, that’s a contradiction that has to be addressed.
*face-palm* two different thing Nicole. He only said that he was protecting his girlfriend well on his own.
I think some of it is a side-effect of reading one page at a time. I also think (as I’ve stated before) that some of it is forgetting the perspectives of those who are proponents of Dan taking the throne. They all have come into the story after either a long time of being in seclusion or hiding, and all of them spent their time prior to said seclusion/hiding in an effort to ensure that the True King gets to have the throne. It’s actually only natural (when you look at it that way) that they’d forget their compassion in their haste to “finally make things right.”
